I-Friend

Our First Date =)

Today, we would like to introduce you, to our new foreigner friend from Japan. His name is Atara. He is a TPHM student and happily married with a Singaporean girl wuttt wuttt. Believe me, they are a very kawaii couple!
Hafizah (his wife) & Atara
The first thing that pops to your mind about Japanese must be ‘politeness’. To Atara, this is basically overgeneralizing their culture, some may be lazy like anyone else too. It is just a way to portray good moral value. Japanese basically bow most of the time to show respect to elderly but sometimes bowing to foreigners can seem to be too much, his Arabian friend even said it’s like ‘rukuk’.

Talking about overgeneralization, let’s break the stereotype!

As mentioned by Atara, just because Japanese are seen as hardworking , it doesn’t mean that they don’t experience what we call ‘STRESS’, in fact majority of Japanese people commits suicide due to over-stressing. Some of them even find ‘drinking’ (sake) as a form of escape. Get drunk and forget. He admires Malaysia for the Islamic teachings so as to lessen the percentage of suicide.

Next, PORNOGRAPHY (Hentai). He stated that the stereotype about pornography is somewhat true because pornography is literally accessible everywhere; in convenience stores, magazines, friends and dvd/vcd. Even the young children have the basic knowledge about hentai.

Japanese people CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH???

Is this true Atara? According to him, it is. But it depends on the person, just like we learn foreign language; it is hard if you don’t put your mind to it. However, Japanese peeps have the difficulty of pronouncing ‘L’ because they are used to replace ‘L’ with ‘R’ in their language.

For example: Malaysia becomes ‘Mareshiya’.

Even though they study vocabulary and English since junior high, it is still hard for them to actually SPEAK the language (English).

Here, we attached a short video from Atara :)

  1. Assalam Shai B and Aqilah!

I bet his interracial marriage gives him an interesting intercultural experience! I wonder...Are there any things that each of them culturally do that they find weird?

Besides that, I understand the difficulty of pronouncing L and R for the Japanese since I'm taking Japanese myself. It actually taught me to be more understanding. Their tongues are just not used to the sounds and so, the distinct sounds must be acquired over time. Needs patience. However, some people adore foreign accents, they make the persons more charming.

  3. Such a cute couple! Living in a society that is often perceived as "hardworking" carries a lot of burden actually because of the competition. The same thing happens to South Korea. We are more then blessed to be Muslims as Islam gives us the remedy for handling stress and for every hardship, there will be an ease.
